This morning I took advantage of a surprise Snow Fall. Yes, I awoke to 8 inches of fluffy snow covering everything...so pretty!

*A few of you ask me, what I thought of the "Red Riding Hood Movie"...
However, I think that movies are subject to personal preference. We all have different tastes.
However, with that said. No, it isn't my favorite movie and I have only seen it once, but the costumes are great! Really pretty costumes.
The movie is very, "teen/romance/action book like" so...Basically it is like a teen paranormal romance novel in a movie. Not too much depth...

Here are some stockclass paintball gauntlets I made for my brother.
He designed the look. We then combined our ideas and this was the result.
I really like how the bright green stitching contrasted with the black.

I think it would be fun to make these in other color combinations as well. Or even with glow in the dark thread...that would be cool.

Well here I am with the second update on my Mystique inspired leather jacket.

The jacket I am taking inspiration from is the one Mystique is wearing in the middle there.
Alrighty...so you want to see what I got for supplies?
My leather arrived and it is very pretty,...
....but I must admit it is far lighter then I was expecting.
The website had it pictured a few shades darker. Meh.
However, I am still going to keep it and just go with the lighter color. So yeah...all good, just not as movie accurate as I was thinking.
Over all the color is a pretty shade of gray and it will do nicely for this time of year and spring...and make a good contrast against my hair I suppose.
The leather is the color of a shark actually.
For the lining....I picked up this electric blue shade. Going for that Mystique color, you know? No one will see it, but me....none the less I wanted something more fun than gray lining.
Here is a quick concept sketch of the jacket style I am going to create.
Oh, the buttons!
What do you think? I wanted a style that was very "xmen-ish", x-men inspired I should say. So after scanning all the button racks I decided upon these.
Aren't they cool? I really wanted metal ones with a big X on them, but I couldn't find anything like that...thus, these were the next best thing. They are full metal with lots of details.
Well that is all I have for updates at the moment...
...Once I start sewing I shall get some pictures.
My Dress Form named Jean Grey will be modeling the coat for me...thought that was rather ironic, but she does such a nice job. All the Dress Forms are named in the studio...makes life easier.
I really like Jean Grey's wardrobe in the X-Men movies as well...I might have to make a dress inspired by her or something. Any ideas?

Here is another dress I made just for wearing around during the day. I like it because it is easy to wear and you can dress it up or down. Or you could wear it for night time events as well.
For these pictures I styled it in a way I would most likely wear it.
A classic black belt accents the waist while a silver cross pendant hangs from a chain around the neck.
The boots reminded me of a Victorian Boot with modern touches...thus, I thought it looked kind of Vampire Style...with a cross necklace and all that. Don't ya think?
I would wear my hair down in waves.
*Seamstress notes: The fabric I used is a poly wool blend of some kind. I found it on an awesome sale, so this whole dress only cost me $9!! (including the zipper) I highly recommend trying out this pattern if you like a simple and elegant style.

I have actually worn the brown version many times. It is very comfortable and fits like a glove. So this navy version should be just the same...hopefully. Same exact fabric anyway.
I also wanted to make a navy dress to go with my Retro X-Men jacket. (once I get it done!) So this sort of fits that I think. I'll just change the boots and necklace of course.

The moon was so bright you can't see all the trees around it in the forest, but you get the general idea. I love full moons, they look so pretty...and it lights up the entire woods! A bit spooky if you are walking around that night, but totally worth it. Just be careful for werewolves....hehheh. ;)

So. I have been on the hunt for a good leather jacket for a while.
Everything I wanted was too expensive ($600 and up....) apparently I have good taste. lol. I just can't justify that kind of money on a jacket right now.
I love black leather.
However, I wear black....very often. So the black clothes + black jacket might be a bit harsh. (Not that I would mind looking like someone from the Matrix)...I just wanted something a little less harsh, for wearing with my "normal" clothes.
~ The Inspiration ~
Thus, I decided on Mystique's Gray Leather Jacket from X-men First Class.
This jacket had everything I wanted. A bit of a retro vibe with a sophisticated "Super Hero Chic" twist. The trench style is perfect with a fitted waist and shorter length.
This way I can wear my black skirts and boots...with a jacket that has a bit more "color". Actually I would copy her whole look...but with a longer skirt of course....and dark brown hair, but whatever. You get the idea.
* side note: I really liked the fact that the Jennifer Lawrence who plays Raven/Mystique isn't some skin and bones little thing. She actually is shaped like a real girl! She is even the same height as me...kind of fun. Anyway...back on topic.
~ The Construction ~
Pattern Design....
ok, I got a bit lazy on this one.
I didn't want to start from scratch! lol. I would rather just find a similar pattern and alter it. (it isn't like I am making a pirate dress or something...) I figured there would be some kind of pattern out there to use as a starting point.
After a really long search I found this pattern. (apparently Trench Coat patterns are harder to find than I thought!)
- (these are designer patterns that come with no instructions or pictures...and you can only buy 1 size at a time) Being this was a European pattern you have to do everything by centimeters. I was in between size 42 and 44 so I decided to go with the 44 (which is USA 36 in) I figured I can make it fit me just how I want anyway. I just bought the pattern so it isn't here yet. :)
Alterations for Design:
What I need to change on the pattern....
You might be wondering...."why would use that pattern if you are going to change it so much?"
Well...the base of the pattern is perfect. I haven't used that company before and I wanted to try something new. The reviews on this pattern company look really good.
I can also use this pattern for a lot more coats! The length would be pretty for a new winter coat.
I will be working on a drawing of the coat, but I haven't finished that yet. I will post it on my next update of this project.
At least this jacket will match my school shirt too.....
~ The Leather and Fabric ~
Yeah! Leather...I love sewing with leather. I know...it is a dead animal, but it makes an awesome jacket. I have used it a number of times, but not on anything that wasn't "historical" or "pirate-ish".
So this will my first "modern" leather jacket. Exciting isn't it?
The leather hide I am going to use is called Slat. You can see it here...
The leather company I really like...and highly recommend is over here Great service and really nice leather.
I need to get some buttons, but that shall be the easy part. Maybe some cool metal ones with an "X" like design? Not sure yet....
For the lining...I think I want to use a dark gray silk of some kind. I shall just have to go and feel all the silky linings until I find one I like.

Here I am with the 4th installment of my Arwen dress making of.

I have recieved many comments and emails asking how my Arwen Dress was coming along......and if I haven't finished it yet, why was it taking me so long?
Well, the very simple reason is....
I only work on this dress when I am not doing customer orders.
So, maybe on Saturday evenings or Sunday afternoons. Maybe.
The beading was also taking me a rather long time to complete and then I ran out of beads! Thankfully, the store where I purchased them was able to custom order more for me. So I could complete the neckline...it would have been rather tragic to have only half of my neckline beaded!
Well, with all that to say....... I have a little something to show you.
Yes, yes...I do. A small sneak peak....
This is a costume I have wanted for many years and it is hard to belive I finally finished it!
The poor un-finished dress has been sitting in a box for a long time, but no more!
Once I slipped those elven slippers on...It felt like I was trying on a wedding dress....so much fun! It totally makes me feel like an elf. :)...or a princess.
I still do not have a crown yet, but we shall see what comes of that.
I am just so happy this gown is done.
Maybe I have elvish blood or something...I could wear these all of my days.

Currently the weather is far to bad to step out of doors in such a gown, but I shall model it for you all when the weather gets better. In the mean time my kind dress form Jean Grey shall do the job for me, she is my body double. ;)

Someone e-mailed me just yesterday asking if I had finished my Mad Hatter Hat....and yes! I have.
I also make a Mad Hatter coat....I better get those pictures posted soon as well.
Here is what the Mad Hatter's looked like in Tim Burton's version of "Alice in Wonderland".

I do still need to get some hat pins, but that can wait for now...and I also need to sew some pink thread on the peacock feather, but alas....moving on.
Now, my hat is not identical in every way to the original one from the movie, but as with all my costumes it is simply "movie inspired"
So here are a few pictures of my Mad Hatter Hat....
This was my first "real" hat to construct. I have done some hats for theater productions..etc...but not to this level of detail. The base was first created from layers of hat buckrum then I built it up with felted wool and other random bits of notions.
All the fabrics are real silk. Rather wonderland don't you think?
The fabric for the outer part of the hat was something I dyed.. It is 100% silk (actually it was a lovely shade of light gold when I started..) but in order for it to become a proper Mad Hatter Hat...well, it needed to be green-ish.
The Scarf/Sash tied around this tall hat is also 100% silk, in a lovely rosy shade rather similar to the movie I thought.
I then painted daisy flowers around the bottom in a similar fashion to the movie hat.
I decided to stitch up the back of my hat to sort of look like "lacing" simply because I thought it was a fun whimsical touch.
The lining for the hat is a dark brown silk with gold dots on it. The movie one is brown and red dots, but I couldn't find one like that...but I thought the golden dots still matched nicely. :)
Here are a few closer up shots of the stiching. I wanted to make it rather...."Mad Hatter" style so I whipstiched the edges together with this lovely thread woven from diffrent strands of color.
My brother made this awesome hat stand for me. Looks perfect with the hat I think.
And last but not least.... two more shots of the complete hat.
I was trying to make the display look similar to a Disneyland window display on MainStreet...so it sort of looks like that, a little bit...just need some disney magic.

On Sunday I decided to take the day off from work and sew up a couple skirts for myself. My wardrobe was starting to look a bit scarecrow-ish, so this is what I am up with.
I had a few yards of organic bamboo knit fabric in a dark chocolate brown hidden in my stash....
....for these skirts I wanted to make them a bit more interesting. So I added a little touch of medieval style to the hems.
Each look is styled in a similar way of how I would wear them. Only I would be wearing long woolen socks with the boots. Or tights. With my hair down in waves most likely.
The shortest parts of the skirts hit a few inches below my knee. Perfect for boots.
*Dragon Skirt*
For my "dragon" skirt I was inspired by a design drawn by Anne Stokes. The hem is shorter in the front than the back..just for fun.
I painted the dragon with a bronze fabric paint I had left over from my steampunk fairy costume.
I really wanted to paint the designs with a celtic green paint, but I didn't have it and think the coppery color sort of acts as a "neutral" depending on what I am wearing up top....right?
*Celtic Skirt*
For the second skirt the hem is longer on one side for a fun whimsical look. Sort of like a fairy...or some such thing. I painted the celtic trinity on it because I thought it was pretty.
All the seams are double needle style stitched to look professional and wear well.
The waistbands are elastic for a nice fit and sit low on the waist. More like on the hips. My favorite way to wear skirts.
The Rivendell pendant is from this awesome shop. Super nice seller and her work is very high quality. Check out her stuff if you are into unique items.
That 'twas just a sneak peak into my daily style.
I am trying to add more clothing items made by me to my wardrobe. Skirts are my favorite thing to wear...and boots! Ah, I adore boots. I probably have too many pairs...but I do wear them all.

If you don't know who Tia Dalma is, she is one of the ladies in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies... and has a rather involved story, but we shall not get into that...obviously I like her sense of style.
Each cuff is one of a kind.
I can't promise that they will bring a touch of destiny to your day....
....but they will add a fun element of pirate style.
Vintage fabrics, shells and antique lace complete each cuffs unique design.
I like all the cuffs, but this is one of my favorites... it such a fun color selection.

So I thought I'd do a little update of what is going on in the studio after that Halloween madness.
I am still in the process of editing and posting new costumes. So keep checking the costume site if you are looking for new garments that we created this Halloween. I also post more updates on the facebook page.

"Knife-Throwing Gypsy Costume" inspired by the new Sherlock Holmes Movie.

The gypsy lady is played by Noomi Rapace and I think her name in the movie is Sim.
I was doing this research and just saving it in a folder, but I thought I would share it here...just in case someone else out there may perhaps be looking for it as well.
First off...the trailer is here. I recommend watching that and then reading further.
I stop framed the shots of her the best I could. It is a fast trailer, so getting perfect images was not easy. Thus a few are bit blurred. However you can still make out details.
You can see the swirling color of the costume here, from when she is flipping upside down.
Here is a close up of the skirt and knife in one scene of the stills from the trailer.
I just did some quick writing on it so you can see the skirt details I am talking about. From what I can see the skirt is made up of stripes of colored fabrics. Similar to a gypsy crazy quilt.
Does it look like there is a metal/leather band for her knives to slide into? Not sure just yet to what to do for that.
At least I get to use some of my gypsy/pirate rings I have a habit of collecting...and wearing.
This is another shot of her throwing. a little blurry, but you can see the details.You can see the sheer-ness of the silk sleeves rather well here.
Her make up is pretty. I like the fact that the makeup artist went for a classic gypy look that could have been achieved with cosmetics from the Victorian era.
You can also see the sleeves a little better in the above image. The stripes are a cool look. However, when I was watching the trailer and saw this image below,...you can clearly see that the top of the sleeves are not attached to the bodice. Because there is an "off the shoulder" effect going on.
See what I mean? I lightened the image so the contrast was better. So I am going to make my sleeves like that. With more of an off the shoulder look permanently.
I am doing complete sketches of this costume in full detail, but I won't be sharing those yet...
This is such a fun costume for me to do. I have always wanted to be a gypsy and having throwing knives. So I was rather happy when I saw her in the trailer. The colors of the costume are also some of my favorites... ah! so much fun.
The costume items I will be sewing/making to create this look are...
1. Victorian style Corset (in an ivory silk so I can wear it with my ella dress also)
2. Full skirted gypsy petticoat
3. Victorian short bloomers...I am thinking of making them in purple silk?
4. Gypy Bodice in black with stars.
5. Gypsy strip patchwork skirt
Here is the corset!
I used a corset pattern I hadn't tried before. I didn't take a back picture because the dress form is actually a little bit bigger than me, so the lacing does close completely on the dress form. *dress forms are always lacking at that "squish" factor. ;)
Although I like this corset because it reminds me of the one Elena wears in Mask of Zorro.
Once I finish more items for this costume I shall post another update.

Today I thought I would share a new dress I made.
I have a problem of not making things for myself. So.... I decided to try out a new dress pattern and see how it went.
The pattern I chose was this pattern from Colette Patterns. A local company here in Portland.
I was looking for a simple and elegant pattern to dress up or down and this pattern fitted that style exactly.
For the pictures I styled it with a couple pirate things. ;) But as you can see the dress can be dressed up with many looks in mind.
Here is a back shot as well...
I would highly recommend this pattern. It is a beginner level pattern, so perfect for everyone. I did make a few fit alterations, but those were just my usual fit issues that I always have.
The fabric is umm.........I have no idea. It was marked as "content unknown". But it feels like a wool blend of some kind. I think.
I'll most likely style this with a pair of tights, knee high boots and my hair down in waves.

Suiliad! (Greetings in the tongue of the elves)
Turns out that last night my cousins and I took a journey to Middle Earth. It 'twas a bit of a last minute/surprise birthday present for my cousin who is having her sweet sixteen as well.
There was a concert of The Fellowship of the Ring scheduled in our city and it looked like so much fun we could not pass it up.
Of course this meant dressing up as well......
We certainly could not travel without our "Fellowship" capes. So being I am part elf I was able to obtain 3 elven cloaks for our journey.
We decided to keep our other garments more modern. So our capes were more of the costumes.
Here is what I wore....simple black dress, evenstar and Elven Cloak!
This cloak is so much fun to wear...it swishes and swirls just like the movie cloaks.
Upon arriving at the event we soon noticed that many other LOTR fans had come from all over. "Tis one of the nice things about attending slightly "geeky" events is that everyone likes the same thing.... or at least can appreciate seeing and hearing the beautifully composed music for "The Fellowship of the Ring".
Here are a few pictures for you to get a little glimpse of how it looked...
The huge screen was placed above the orchestra and they played live music for the film. I was so surprised that they played the whole movie (well the shorter edited version)..
The music was amazing. I had so much fun just watching everyone play the instruments, the violinists were insane! Lots of fast playing and perfect timing.
During intermission we found that there was a display of items from the movie. Of course the 3 of us ran out there to see. We were greeted by a very impressive Lurtz statue/wearing the real costume. Wow, that guys was really tall.
A ringwraith was also in attendance, a fact I was most pleased about. I have always like the ringwraiths.
I ran out of space on my camera card. ah! So I don't have as many pictures of the props as I would like. However, you can see some of the cool stuff below.
I love swords. alot. so the fact that there were many LOTR swords there, I was super excited. It was odd though that only one Legolas knife was on the table. The shards of Narsil looked pretty awesome. I think I need those for my collection.

Over all we had an amazingly fun time traveling to Middle Earth.

Well....my gloves have been published anyway.
Looks like my little alice in wonderland kids gloves have been featured in Parenting Magazine "Glee Fashion: Back to School" photoshoot. ah!! I was rather excited, to say the least.

Capes and Cloaks. I love wearing them. Sadly, it is too warm in the Summer. sigh.
However Autumn and Winter are perfect for wearing these garments...and yes, you can still wear them with jeans and boots. Who doesn't want to add a touch of that romantic style to an everyday outfit?
I have a few capes that get me through the Autumn and Winter months. One is brown wool, the other is brown velvet and the last one, but certainly not least is my black and burgandy velvet.
However, my wardrobe is lacking a red wool cape.
Well, I happened to find this 90% wool woven fabric on sale the other day. I couldn't help it, the fabric needed to be bought to be turned into a cape.
What else would this lovely red wool be suited for...
...besides a Red Riding Hood Cloak?
The wool is much more red and rich in real life. It did not want to capture the correct color on my camera.
So that is another item to add to my summer sewing list.

So my friends and I decided to dress up for a Pirate Photoshoot on the opening night of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I have dressed up for the other POTC movies and didn't want to break the tradition.
I wore my Brielle's Pirate Costume with Leather Jacket and my two friends wore costumes they put together with ready made garments. So I don't have information on their items.
I had a hard time choosing only a few pictures to include here. We very much enjoyed prancing around like pirates and the weather couldn't have been more perfect for a photoshoot.
