Inspired by French Style....

Bonjour everyone!

Today I wanted to share something that isn't really "costume related", but fashion.

I have this obbession with casual French style. Well, French things in general really.

I am learning to speak French, slowly.... but surely. Someday perhaps fluently.

Far to many pictures and images fill my computer of casual French Girl fashion.

However, one of my favorite inspiration for French Style comes from a Victoria Magazine from October 2000. Yes, this is one magazine I have held onto for a long while.

Isn't the cover image so pretty? I want that staircase by the way.

This photo reminds me of a modern day "Belle" from Beauty and the Beast. Not really in looks, but just the fact that she is in a bookshop in Paris.

This whole article is amazing! Corsets are worn with long evening skirts for a modern take on romantic under pinnings.

The makeup is stunning as well. The image below left is one of my very favorites.

ohhh!! and the gorgeous velvets in these corsets are an amazing contrast with the skirts. Those sleeves! Ah, just love them.

Movie Costume Monday: Seneca Crane

Happy Movie Costume Monday!

As many of you know, The Hunger Games buzz has been everywhere online. .

To be honest I was very skeptical, but the movie was surprisingly good. I totally recommend it! 

I actually liked the movie better then the book. (However I have only read the first story in the series)

Now, while I was watching the movie my eye naturally goes towards costume and makeup details.

Costume Designer Judianna Makovsky was able to make the costumes from Suzanne Collins’ futuristic world come to life. I thought she did a fantastic job! 

Ve Neill created and designed the makeup looks of a dystopian future for "The Hunger Games". She is my favorite makeup artist so it was really fun to see her work in this movie. Tons of attention to detail as well as a unique "real life feel" to all the characters looks.

I think one of my favorite "character looks" (ok besides Katniss of course. Her costumes were perfect)

Was actually Seneca Crane.

His beard was just epic. Totally the first thing I noticed when promotional stills started to appear online a few months back.

*according to Ve Neill, it took her 3 hours to create this beard. Then touch ups throughout filming.

The red and black color scheme used on his costumes was an excellent contrast with the more bright and garish colors worn by the rest of the capital celebrities.

 
For his actual "costume design" the garments were streamlined and more simplistic, but with a futuristic edge. I liked the cross over shirts and perfectly tailored jackets. Lots of silks used I think.

Movie Costume Monday: Obi Wan's Costumes

These last two weeks have been incredibly busy. I do apologize for the lack of updates and posts...

However, I have lots of fun things coming this week. So stay tuned!

For this Movie Costume Monday I thought I would feature Obi Wan's style throughout the Star Wars Movies.

The Costumes from the 3 prequel movies were designed by Trisha Biggar. The original trilogy costumes for the classic films were designed by John Mollo. I think Trisha did an amazing job recreating the looks and adding her own style.

The Classic Jedi.

I remember seeing the "Phantom Menace" for the first time..it was so cool, to see the young version of Obi Wan. Loved it. His style is interesting because his Jedi Costume has soooo many little details..and it changes ever so slightly for each movie.

Twilight Zone.....inspired fashion?

This is going to be a rather random post.

However, there is some reason behind it...kind of. When I am sewing (and not listening to movies) I am usually listening to TV shows.

Those are almost always X-Files, Fringe or the Twilight Zone.....etc...

I was listening to the first episode of season 3 of Twilight Zone the other day and for some reason I really liked the outfits! Lol, I know weird right?

Well anyway...the story line was short. Typical Twilight Zone etc...but the outfits were "end of the world" cool....

The Woman in the show puts on this fancy dress she found in an old shop. Then straps on her guns and very large knife. Love it!

Kind of reminded me of Ella's Dress from Cowboys and Aliens. read that here

Soft/Lady Like + End of the World Tough....

 

I like that style, but I like weird sci-fi stuff.

Especially when it involves a worn down dress that used to be stunning.

Aka, Tia Dalma's Costume, Colleen Atwood's costume designs for Mrs. Lovett etc... There is just something I am drawn to about worn down pretty dresses with the lady holding a good weapon. Love it.

Oh! Side Note: I like her makeup as well.

I know it is in black and white, but the tones and style are still cool.

It is kind of interesting because the "smokey eye" she is wearing in this episode didn't come into real day to day fashion for quite a few years. Now it is the normal look. You see it everywhere. It is one of my favorites eye makeups to do.

I think you could achieve a similar look with this tutorial. Or try copying one of Amanda Seyfried's eye makeup styles...

This Costume could really be a starting point for all kinds of fashion/costume ideas. I might just go draw something up inspired by this....oh, the possibilities!

Movie Costume Monday: The Scarlet Pimpernel

For this costume Monday let's go back to the French Revolution...

“They seek him here, they seek him there,

...those Frenchies seek him everywhere.

Is he in heaven...or is he in hell?

That elusive pimpernel..."

My favorite version of this classic tale is the one starring Jane Seymour here

 

Marguerite St. Just owns one of my favorite Colonial wardrobes. 

Her closet must be stuffed to the brim with gorgeous corsets and gowns. 

"Tis hard for me to choose a favorite gown of hers so I just decided to show a selection of some of my favorites...although, I left out her red velvet gown from the theater...even though I adore that one. I shall save it for a feature all its own.

Actually, just about ever costume in this film is excellent. The tailoring is immaculate and the silks and satins are trimmed to perfection.

The costumes were designed by Phylliss Dalton (also Princess Bride)

I also like the Scarlet Pimpernel books...great read.

Red Riding Hood Cape in a Magic Snowfall....

This morning I took advantage of a surprise Snow Fall. Yes, I awoke to 8 inches of fluffy snow covering everything...so pretty!

So why not grab my red riding hood cape and capture a few pictures?

 *A few of you ask me, what I thought of the "Red Riding Hood Movie"...

However, I think that movies are subject to personal preference. We all have different tastes.

However, with that said. No, it isn't my favorite movie and I have only seen it once, but the costumes are great! Really pretty costumes.

The movie is very, "teen/romance/action book like" so...Basically it is like a teen paranormal romance novel in a movie. Not too much depth...

 

Costume Sneak Peak and Jack Skellington

Just wanted to share a sneak peak of one of the new costumes leaving the studio...

If you are a Lord of the Rings fan this should be fairly recognizable, for an "inspired by" costume version....very elvish.

Some of my "cat woman mask lace" was tumbling off of the shelf...

...and I thought it looked cool next to Jack. Rather Tim Burton Esque.

Jack Skellington hangs out in the sewing room as does Sally. I shall have to take a picture of her next time....they had a bit of fun to the studio.

 

I will be making a Lace Cat Woman mask inspired by this one. Just not sure when, but at least I have the lace right?

Movie Costume Monday: Faye Dolan

Greetings,

Today I thought something 1960's would be fun. Thus I decided upon Liv Tyler in "That Thing You Do". She looked so pretty and 1960's in this movie.

I hadn't seen this movie in years (it came out in 1996) but it was on tv a while back, so I ended up watching it again...totally forgot how cute Liv's wardrobe was.

ahhh! Now I know why I liked the costumes, they were done by Colleen Atwood. Lol. Not sure how I didn't know this sooner, but now I do.

here is a the link to the song in the movie. Warning...will get stuck in your head.

Her wardrobe is very classic 1960's, but with more of jewel tone color scheme. (black, green, blue.etc..) With her long dark hair. LOVE it.

Of course we can't forget her perfect cat eyeliner and nude lipgloss. (Although, I pretty much always like Liv Tyler's Makeup and Style in her movies. She is just naturally stunning.)

This has actually inspired me to try out a 60's inspired makeup look like hers. Hmmm...have to do that this week.

Vegan Strawberry "Milkshakes"

So....I wanted something sweet and some lovely strawberries were sitting on the counter. Hmmm....the possibilities.

Now. Let's pretend my kitchen looks like this....

All those bottles, tins and cannisters are exactly something I would love to have in a kitchen. Not to mention a giant marble table.

Here is the finished concoction of strawberry goodness.

I don't actually have "a recipe" per say, for this concoction. I was inspired by this recipe that I saw a link to from Glamour Magazine.

Here is what I threw into the blender...

• - Lots of strawberries! (I think...I used 8...or  9?) Not sure. opps!
• - Coconut Milk (So Delicious Brand) Just poured it into till it looks right.
• - 2 heaping tablespoons Almond Flour (I made my own) 
• - 4 heaping tablespoons rolled oats.
• - dash of pineapple juice as a sweetener (or you could use honey, etc...)

I put the oats and almond flour in first to grind it up. Then added the coconut milk and let it sit for about 10 min. Then I came back and added the strawberries and dash of pineapple juice. Blend, blend...blend! 

The oats and almonds once soaked sort of take on a more "creamy" texture. So this way I get that dairy feel without having to use any milk at all. Awesome!

Pour into glasses and add a cut strawberry.

This makes 2 servings. (You can share. Or drink them both yourself...)

 So adjust how you need to for your own recipe. I don't often measure for smoothies, I just pour it in until the mixture looks right for how much I want to make.

I think I am officially addicted to smoothies.

Green smoothies are my favorite thing for breakfast....and fruit smoothies make a great snack/treat.

I don't normally paint my nails that often. However it does add a bit of fun color to the day.

Tonight I am going to attend my cousins opening night of her drama schools "Wizard of OZ" production...Congrats to her, she is playing the Wicked Witch! So I wanted to support that with some bright sparkly green nails. hehhe.

I used Zoya Ivanka. Emerald City approved don't you think?

Plays are such fun. (I actually prefer being behind the scenes helping out, but it is still fun to go see shows) Do you like attending theater/drama productions?

Well I better go and follow the yellow brick road!

Mina's Braided Hairstyle

This was a bit of random post, but I did my hair like this yesterday and thought I would share.

I was going to call this the Easy Braided "Up-Do" Hairstyle....

.......but that is really boring and lacking any kind of "special-ness".

Thus I named it "Mina's Messy Braided Hairstyle".

Just in case you didn't know Mina Harker is a fictional lady from Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula...

This is my version of a "messy bun".

I can't stand the "top knot" trend right now...*shudders*, but it might suit someone else nicely.

'Tis rather hard to sew and have a waterfall of hair in your face.

So I wear my hair up very often when I am working.

*My hair always shows up strange on camera. It is indeed really dark brown, but for some reason it likes to appear darker and then lighter in some photos. Whatever.

(Yes we have snow this week!)

How to do it....

This style is actually really fast to do. Took me about 3 min.

Now I should have gone back and adjusted it a bit, but I liked the messy look today. 

My hair is waist length and layered, but this can work with lots of hair lengths. Just adjust the style to suit your own hair.

*For this hairstyle I don't use bobbypins or hair elastic. Just 2 hairsticks.

1. Brush through your hair to make it smooth, mine is a bit damp here... so it looks kind of wavy.

2. First section off your hair like you are doing a simple "half up" and twist each section. Hold in place with your fingers.

3. Next fluff it up a little bit so it doesn't look so severe. Ok, then start braiding the end....all while trying to keep that "twist" in place.

4. Wind the braid into a bun and secure with a hair sticks. Criss cross them for a strong hold.

I just like using hair sticks because you can take the style down really quick if you want to. Plus you don't have to use all those pins.

 

This is a really secure style that won't fall out during the day. At least for me it doesn't. Even if you are crawling around on the floor adjusting hems on a costume. Or other adventures...

*I purchased these hair sticks a while back from NightBlooming. They were indeed a set of "Mina/Dracula Inspired Sticks". Because...you see, the hair sticks are wooden stakes (just in case you need an emergency back up way to stop a vampire) with dark green stones (I would guess this is Mina's favorite color) and see the little "droplet of blood"?...ties everything together.

Come fabric shopping with me!

So I went on a bit of a fabric shopping adventure this weekend to gather supplies for upcoming secret projects. (aka...more costumes!)

While I was there I thought I would bring my camera along and get a few shots of the pretty fabric store.

I am very lucky to live in an area that has a fairly good selection of fabric stores. (Not at many as I would like, but enough to find some cool stuff)

 ahh...my favorite part of the store! The Velvet Section.

Is it wrong to go and pet all the fabrics?....

Rows of silk velvet as well.....so pretty.

I was tempted to buy some Arwen Dress fabric, but didn't.

Pirate ye be warned.....linen shirt fabric below.....so many great choices!

I would like to make a trip down to Califorina to poke around in some of those fabrics shops again, but in the mean time...I have options.

Movie Costume Monday: Elizabeth Swann Wedding Dress

Today is my 4oth "Movie Costume Monday" post. Wow, that is crazy.

I would simply love to make a recreation of this dress.

Yards and yards of silk, beading and embroidery. So pretty.

Penny Rose did an amazing job. I read in an interview with her that she actually made the original version of this dress. (Not the stunt versions) It was one of the only costumes she fully constructed herself.

I actually prefer how the dress looks worn and rumpled a bit after she is taken to the prison.

Her make up is my very favorite after the rain...with that smokey pirate eye and messy hair.

If I was going to make myself a colonial dress I would do it in this style.

Perhaps another color....I am not sure if I would want the "wedding dress" look.

What say you?

ah yes. The sewing update.

I have had a number of e-mails this week asking what I am sewing.

I am sorry I can't update more often. You see when I am working on customer costumes I don't take progress picture shots. I just keep sewing, cutting and trimming until the costume is complete.

Once I finish everything I shall be posting lots of costumes this month!

Krma Jacket Review

Today I have a review to share.

I am not getting paid for this by any means. I am simply wanting to share a review online. This way if someone is looking for a review on this jacket brand you can kind find it!

So I have been eyeing these jackets for about a year now.

The styles are very sleek, but still classic.

I was lucky to find a great sale. So I treated myself to something new.

As a seamstress I can certainly say these are VERY well made jackets. Perfect. The leather is high quality as well as the lining. The sleeves were actually long enough for me. Loved that.

Nice metal zipper and perfectly placed welt pockets.

It makes me really happy that these are made in the USA.

This is the style I have... Crinkle Jacket Black in a size M. (36 bust, 27 waist)

I would suggest reading the size charts closely and getting the one that fits your measurements...not your standard clothing size. 

What I like best about the fit is that the bottom of the jacket features a ribbing fabric. It fits a more hourglass shape perfectly. Sometimes I have found that if a jacket fits at the hips the waist is too big, or the other way around.

So if you have a bit of a curvy figure this fits extremely well.

The collar detail is very nice. Simple, but elegant as well.

It is actually designed for a ladies neck. Sometimes store bought jackets have these big clunky collars that don't work if you have slim neck. This one is flattering.

It is very similar to the one that the alternate Olivia wears on Fringe...thus the reason I like this jacket so much. The pockets are the only difference.. (and it is another brand, but you get the idea) 

Acording to Krma's website this is the same jacket worn by Nina Dobrev. I hear this is the exact jacket style that was worn by Katherine/Elena in the Vampire Daires TV show? Not sure.

I just liked the style! It is a great piece to dress up or down.

Makes your basic jeans and skirts look so much better.

I can't wait for the weather to warm up a bit so I can wear it! It is still snowy outside so it might be a while.

Just one of those kinds of days.

I was feeling pirate-y today....

....so why not paint my nails with a mermaid color?

This is one of my favorite nail colors. It is "stranger tides" from OPI's Pirates Mermaid collection that came out last year. It makes my skin look...almost translucent? VERY mermaid like I think.

The color doesn't show up the best in these photos, but you get the idea. It is a murky pale green color with a white undertone.

It reminds me of summer... even though it is snowing outside.

Stockclass Paintball Guantlets

Here are some stockclass paintball gauntlets I made for my brother.

He designed the look. We then combined our ideas and this was the result.

I really like how the bright green stitching contrasted with the black.

*These have been used, so yes...they are a bit dirty. All the better.

I think it would be fun to make these in other color combinations as well. Or even with glow in the dark thread...that would be cool.

Movie Costume Monday: Grace Kelly as Lisa Fremont

Sorry this is a bit late this morning, but I was hoping to feature a gown from the Oscar's last night...however, I didn't see one dress that had a "wow" factor for me.

How sad. In all those dresses you would think one of them would be have show stopping. Although, I didn't see pictures of many of my favorite actresses...not sure why they are not in the line up for photos.

So I decided to go retro and feature one of Edith Head's most famous designs.

Grace Kelly's Dress in Rear Window.

I really like Alfred Hitchcock movies. They are great. Edith Head did sooo many of the costume designs as well, so we get the best of both.

Grace Kelly starred in 3 Alfred Hitchcock movies. (Dial M for Murder, Rear Window, To Catch a Thief) and each time she appeared on film her wardrobe was stunning.

She reminds me a bit of a fancy Nancy Drew in this movie. The classic Nancy Drew stories. Especially the scene when she is wearing that pretty 1950's dress climbing up the side of the apartment....with heels.

Cat Woman Style...

Batman is my favorite Super Hero. So I am very much looking forward to the 3rd installment in Christopher Nolan's epic batman trilogy. Not to mention the costumes are always spot on perfect.

The costumes were designed by Lindy Hemming.

You may have seen her amazing work in movies such as Casino Royale, Clash of the Titans, Tomb Raider: Lara Croft (1&2), etc...

She also did the costumes for Batman Begins and the Dark Knight of course. Might as well do the whole trilogy if you can.

Selina Kyle/Cat Woman Fashion

Her "under cover" look appears to be very elegant and almost Audrey Hepburn inspired. With a modern edge..not quite 60's, but definitely a retro feel.

The black leather gloves are hot and those shoes are awesome. Wonder what designer did those. hmmm....

I am lovin' her lace mask and red lips look. This combination isn't exactly unique, but that is ok. It works very nicely with her whole style and color scheme.

Classic pearl earrings and red nails complete the look. I do like the shape of the mask...rather pretty. I would have expected the "cat eye" pointed lace mask, but I like this too.

The Cat Suit!

ok, I have noticed lots of hate and lots of love for her cat suit on the blog world.

I personally really like it. It actually looks practical. (well other than those shoes...but hey, she has to have heels...it is Catwoman) The over all design is sleek and elegant.

The design of the suit plays with elements from the classic "cat woman look" but still keeps her covered enough to fly about roof tops at night without being seen.

I do like that she has long hair. That looks great with the contrast of the all black costume.

Are those ears I see as well? She had to have some kind of cat accent. 

It appears that the heels on her boots are steel. Nice touch. Maybe they are sharp...that would be super cool. Knife blade heels?

Oh, here is a shot of the gown she is most likely wearing with that lace mask. At least that is my guess. Sort of goes with the rest of the outfit. Maybe?

So what are your thoughts?

Yay or Nay on the New Catwoman look?

I am working on a cat woman mask/makeup look so keep an eye out for that if you like that kind of thing.....

Treasured Item: Zorro's Sword

Greetings!

Today...this post really has nothing to do with sewing a costume, but....I was dusting my weapon rack and wanted to share my Zorro Sword with you all.

Simply, because I thought there might be a few Zorro fans out there who would like to see it.

I don't recall what shop I purchased it from online....

Um.....5 years ago? Maybe 4 years ago.

The sword was made in Spain and features the authentic prop replica stamp upon it.

 

It is a bit stiff to pull out of the sheath, but it does work very well if pulled out quickly.

Here is my version.....

*side note, the blade in the pictures looks shorter than it really is.  The full length of the blade is actually 35.5 inches. * I hope that answers your questions, to those of you who asked.

Love the detail on the hilt...it completes the Spanish look.

Movie Costume Monday: Mary Watson

Today I decided to feature Mary's Wedding Dress from Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows.

Isn't her gown pretty? Very Victorian Elegance.

You can see it better in this shot.... Poor Watson is looking a bit bedraggled.

I really liked all the costumes in this movie. Jenny Beavan did a fantastic job on the designs. I always like how she puts Sherlock's style together.

Mary's Costumes were very lovely. Lots of classic Victorian looks.

How to turn into a Vampire...well, kind of.

Thanks for your comment Jessica. So happens...yeah, I do know of a good place.

I purchased a couple sets through vampfangs.com.

The first pair I bought...back in, 2009? I needed them for a college level special effects makeup class. I bought the other pair about a year later...so I could have a pair for getting bloody and a pair for staying clean. Ahem.... Because blood does actually stain these, so I suggest getting 2 pairs if you want to get messy.

I prefer these styles of fangs they look a bit more natural and the color is pretty close to my real tooth color. You can't beat the price either. They come in their own little coffin too. lol. I keep mine in a little black circle box though..more elegant.

Ok,...there is no pretty or lady like way for me to show you my fangs.

So here ya go. Before and after.

 

Good thing I don't take myself too seriously, right?

The only thing with mine is that my real fangs are too pointy to wear the fake fangs upon. Ironic isn't it?...thought it was funny.

So I had to move them over to my other teeth. Yeah, so if you don't have super pointy real fangs you should be able to wear these right over your natural fangy teeth...er. Something like that.

Besides, if you were really going to bite someone this would be a better placement anyway....but, I shall stop there. Digressing...

I am not a sparkly vampire fan...sorry Twilight.

Just a side note...You could totally wear red lipstick with these fangs as well. I am not really a lipstick type girl and didn't feel like getting all done up for these shots. Thus the "natural" vampire look.I figured there are some vampire who like the natural look...right?

Warning: Fangs also give you a bit of a lisp...lol. So be warned. You might not sound very cool when talking with fangs...in fact it can be down right funny. Looking a like a creepy vampire and then having a lisp...so keep the talking short.

Oh, if you are makeup fan...I highly recommend the UrbanDecay Naked2 set. It is perfect for pale cool based skintones. I never bought the first UrbanDecayNaked color set because the colors were too warm for me.

So if you are a pale creature, I suggest investing in this....really awesome eye colors. It is the only eyecolor set I think I shall ever need. You can achieve all kinds of looks with these selection of colors. I just went for a natural look today.

 

This is what the fangs look like in the little box. I just have them sitting on a diary that looked kind of 1860's to me. Or some such thing.

It is kind of side hobby of mine...I think it would be an amazing job to be a make up artist. So many things...so little time.

I REALLY want to purchase a pair of these Retractable Fangs. How awesome are those??? So at some point I will have to add those to my collection as well. I shall do a review on those if I buy a pair.

Should I channel my inner Snow White?

So I have been keeping an eye out on the new movie

"Snow White and the Huntsman". movie info here

The costumes are looking fantastic!

(but of course they would be....Thanks Colleen Atwood!)

I am really tempted to add her costume to my "costume wish list".

It would be really fun to wear to go see the movie...yeah, I do stuff like that.

The nice thing is I wouldn't have to do anything to my hair! Her hair style appears to be long and sort of wavy messy...I already get called a vampire, so the white skin is all good to go. lol.

The main reason for dressing up as Snow would be the costume.

Her costume appears to have leather like leggings too...

....A light blue under tunic/blouse and of course that lace up bodice with the "classic snow white sleeves"....love it.

The bodice fabric appears to be a suede maybe? I need to look at the pictures a bit more to actually figured that out. Any thoughts? Looks like it could possibly be boned as well...that would make sense. The sleeves are classic stripes with silk ribbon binding and what appears to be gold studs?

I am guessing the blue blouse/tunic is a silk linen...or some such thing. Lots of detail at the neckline.The fitted sleeves lace up the arm...so cool!

It is fun when movie costumes are layered in detail.

However, it does cause a problem when trying to recreate a look.

Anyway....I saw these images and thought this costume was kind of my style. Just add a sword...or two and the look is complete.

Oh,...and a cape. I think Snow White should have a cape. A velvet one.

Should I go for a Snow White Inspired look?

The movie comes out on June 1st so that would give me a little bit of time.

Mystique's Leather Jacket: Construction part 2

Well here I am with the second update on my Mystique inspired leather jacket.

The jacket I am taking inspiration from is the one Mystique is wearing in the middle there.

Alrighty...so you want to see what I got for supplies?

My leather arrived and it is very pretty,...

....but I must admit it is far lighter then I was expecting.

The website had it pictured a few shades darker. Meh.

However, I am still going to keep it and just go with the lighter color. So yeah...all good, just not as movie accurate as I was thinking.

Over all the color is a pretty shade of gray and it will do nicely for this time of year and spring...and make a good contrast against my hair I suppose.

The leather is the color of a shark actually.

For the lining....I picked up this electric blue shade. Going for that Mystique color, you know? No one will see it, but me....none the less I wanted something more fun than gray lining. 

Here is a quick concept sketch of the jacket style I am going to create.

Oh, the buttons!

What do you think? I wanted a style that was very "xmen-ish", x-men inspired I should say. So after scanning all the button racks I decided upon these.

Aren't they cool? I really wanted metal ones with a big X on them, but I couldn't find anything like that...thus, these were the next best thing. They are full metal with lots of details.

 Well that is all I have for updates at the moment...

...Once I start sewing I shall get some pictures.

My Dress Form named Jean Grey will be modeling the coat for me...thought that was rather ironic, but she does such a nice job. All the Dress Forms are named in the studio...makes life easier.

I really like Jean Grey's wardrobe in the X-Men movies as well...I might have to make a dress inspired by her or something. Any ideas?

Star Style inspired by Wonderland...

If you didn't know it already Colleen Atwood is one of my (many) favorite costume designer. She does amazing work. So fun and whimsical...

However, this post was inspired completely by the picture below. 

The picture is from an Alice in Wonderland Movie Event....

You have Anne on one side...looking very classic modern hollywood in a high end designer gown...and Helena. Well, looking like her self. No fancy free designer dress for her. She even accented her look with Queen of Hearts accessories! Love it.

Helena Bonham Carter always takes "risks" in the fashion world and most "high-end fashion experts" dis her and say her style is ridicules....

I personally admire the fact that she wears what SHE LIKES! and even if that means calling her friend Colleen Atwood to whip up a custom created gown for a red carpet event.

She wears what makes her happy.

Who else could carry around a sparkly sequined clutch with the Queen of Hearts on it while wearing a corseted puffy gown on the red carpet? Not many. It suits her style very nicely though.

She was quoted to say..."I don't care what people think. I wear what I like, it is just clothing. Red Carpets are supposed to be about the movies."- Helena Bonham Carter

That is exactly the reason she wore a custom designed dress from Colleen Atwood for the 2011 Oscars. She wanted it to be about the movies...and the costume designer. Wow. very cool.

I actually really like her dress. It is so...Sophisticated Wonderland.

Her style for another "Alice in Wonderland Event" in the photo below was clearly inspired by the "tim burton look". I wonder if Colleen had anything to do with this outfit? Certainly looks that way...

I actually really like Anne's outfit. I would wear that. However Helena's mad hatter-esq look is so fun. Look at the lace fingerless gloves!

Now, dressing like Mrs. Lovett everyday might not be for everyone....but she makes it work.

Movie Costume Monday: Valentine’s Couples

Well being that Valentine's Day is tomorrow...

I decided to pick four "couples" based upon my favorites and their costumes.

So without further ado...here we are!

*this was REALLY hard to only pick 4 couples...too many good movies out there.

• Wesley and Buttercup 
• Zorro and Elena
• Aragorn and Arwen
• Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth

The above couples are from some of my favorites movies based upon the costumes.

I simply had to choose Princess Bride...a movie about true love! Zorro and Elena are the perfect swashbuckling couple with amazing costumes! Aragorn and Arwen...one of my all time favorite couples. Mr. Darcy and Lizzie.....well, Pride and Prejudice is a well known love story for a good reason.

What can I say...I am a hopeless romantic.

I received these lovely red roses from my Dad.  I thought that was really sweet.

Red Roses are my very favorite flower. Love them. Aren't they pretty?

Navy Blue Day Dress: Vampire Style....

Here is another dress I made just for wearing around during the day. I like it because it is easy to wear and you can dress it up or down. Or you could wear it for night time events as well.

For these pictures I styled it in a way I would most likely wear it.

A classic black belt accents the waist while a silver cross pendant hangs from a chain around the neck.

The boots reminded me of a Victorian Boot with modern touches...thus, I thought it looked kind of Vampire Style...with a cross necklace and all that.  Don't ya think?

I would wear my hair down in waves.

• Boots are from Macy's. (bought back in November)
• Necklace was thrifted and re-painted tarnished silver
• Black Leather Belt is just a basic piece
• Blue Dress was made from this awesome pattern

*Seamstress notes: The fabric I used is a poly wool blend of some kind. I found it on an awesome sale, so this whole dress only cost me $9!! (including the zipper) I highly recommend trying out this pattern if you like a simple and elegant style.

I have actually worn the brown version many times. It is very comfortable and fits like a glove. So this navy version should be just the same...hopefully. Same exact fabric anyway.

I also wanted to make a navy dress to go with my Retro X-Men jacket. (once I get it done!) So this sort of fits that I think. I'll just change the boots and necklace of course.

Check out the full moon we had tonight... Isn't it pretty?

The moon was so bright you can't see all the trees around it in the forest, but you get the general idea. I love full moons, they look so pretty...and it lights up the entire woods! A bit spooky if you are walking around that night, but totally worth it. Just be careful for werewolves....hehheh. ;)

Movie Costume Monday: Emma and Mr. Knightly

 This week for movie costume Monday I thought I would go a bit Jane Austen on you all.

So why not Emma and Mr.Knightly from the newest version of Jane Austen's novel, Emma?

This mini-series stars Romola Garai as Emma Woodhouse.

 I think the costume designer Rosalind Ebbutt did a lovely job with the color palette with the use of earth tones and pops of jewel colored fabrics. So much better than the standard "white" look often seen in Jane Austen films.

I also enjoy the Gwyneth Paltrow "Emma movie"... however, I like the costumes better in the newer version. So there ya go.

What say you? Yea or Nay?

A Little Narnia Style costume is now on my website...

It was inspired by Susan's Dress from The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.
